EK1: Knows and understands basic issues of Canada’s relations with the U.S., as well as their theoretical background

EK2: Has knowledge on political, social and economic processes determining relations between Canada and the United States

EK3: Has deepened knowledge on current events in Canadian-U.S. relations

EK4: knows and understands basic issues of US relations with Latin American and the Caribean countries

EK5: has knowledge on political, economic and social factors determinig relations in the Western Hemisphere

EK6: Has a broad knowledge on current geopolitical situation in Latin American and the Caribean

Metody i kryteria oceniania: (tylko po angielsku)

Attendance: Students must attend all course meetings (medical or any other legitimate reasons of absence are honored).

Participation: Students must participate in discussions. 20% of the final grade is composed of the participation in discussions.

Readings: Some classes (clearly market in the syllabus) require reading materials which will be distributed to students on the Jagiellonian University e-learning website (PEGAZ, pegaz.uj.edu.pl). Students must read the required articles assigned before each of these classes. For some classes students will be divided into groups and each group will have different required readings assigned. Additionally, for students interested in some topics there are optional readings (also clearly marked) assigned to some classes also available on the PEGAZ website.

Final exam: will be held during the last class, will take 60 minutes, several short essay questions

8. the cold war in Latin America:

- Latin America as a US’ sphere of influence

- Cuban revolution in the cold war perspective

- Central America as a US backyard

9. Latin American integration.

10. US – Latin American relations in the post cold war era.

11. China as a new power in Latin America

Metody dydaktyczne: (tylko po angielsku)

Explanation of topics is given during lectures, which are visualised by power point presentations, short documentaries, press news and documents.

Learning by presenting certain issues by students both individually and in groups to enhance collaboration.
