Cele kształcenia:

The aim of the module is to provide an overview of the discipline of Political Science focusing on its fundamental theories, concepts, debates and challenges.

Efekty kształcenia:

EK1: Knowledge of the relations between the various sub-disciplines of European Studies (law, political science, economics, history, the social sciences, and cultural studies) (K_W02 ++++)

EK2: Knowledge and appreciation of the basic terminology used in the academic pursuits comprised in European Studies (K_W03 +++)

EK3: A coordinated, general scope of knowledge of the contemporary history of international relations, and of the contemporary political and social history of Europe (K_W08 ++)

EK4: Ability to read, understand, and perform a critical analysis of texts relating to subjects associated with European Studies (K_U02 ++)

EK5: Ability to prepare and deliver an oral presentation compiled on the basis of his/her own individual work or the collective effort of a team (K_U06 ++)

EK6: Ability to prepare and deliver an oral presentation compiled on the basis of his/her own individual work or the collective effort of a team (K_U10 ++)

EK7: Awareness of his/her responsibility for the outcomes of his/her work individually and in a team. (K_K09+)

EK8: A capacity for efficient individual work and teamwork, performing a variety of duties in the group (K_K02++)

Assessment


Class participation (prerequisite).


1. Students are expected to actively participate in the classes. Attendance is mandatory (students missing more than two classes will need to meet with the coordinator of the course and make up the missing classes). Missing more than 50% of the classes will result in failure of the course and the need to retake it the following year.


2. Students are expected to read key readings assigned for each session. Students missing more than 2 classes will have to make them up by writing a paper per each class missed. The papers and corresponding topics assigned by the course tutor, will cover at least 2,000 words each (including footnotes and bibliography).


The final grade consists of:


- Seminar presentation(s) (20% of the final grade)

- Written examination – multiple-choice test based on the issues covered in seminars (80% of the final grade). The written exam consists of 10 open questions.

Metody dydaktyczne:

During the seminars each of the problems will be discussed on an interactive basis. Each session will address a scope of the particular problem and an open discussion. Each of the seminar will comprise of an analysis of the text students were asked to read, students oral presentations (15-20 minutes each) related to the main points within the scope of particular problem followed by the discussion with students.

Bilans punktów ECTS:

40 hours of seminars (contact hours with teachers);

35 hours – preparation of presentations

40 hours – preparation of compulsory and additional readings for seminars;

35 hours – preparation for the final exam.

Total: 150 h

Skrócony opis:

The aim of the module is to provide an overview of the discipline of Political Science focusing on its fundamental theories, concepts, debates and challenges. It provides students with a foundation of knowledge on politics and develops their analytical skills necessary to understand the world of modern politics in various societal, institutional and historical contexts. The special aim of the course is to locate current Political Science debates in a wider European context taking into account political processes on European, regional and national levels. In particular, the course puts emphasis on learning to select, assess and critically engage information on current political developments using academic knowledge and suitable analytical tools. Lastly, the course aims to develop students’ citizenship skills, ability to academically discuss politically sensitive issues and productively cooperate with other students.
