Cele kształcenia:

(tylko po angielsku) The research part of the subject:

The main goal of the subject is to perform experiments as a part of the preparation of the diploma dissertation, with emphasis on developing proficiency and independence in these activities.

The emphasis is placed on:

1. systematic advancement of the knowledge in some branches of biotechnology;

2. in-depth broadening of the scientific knowledge, including the current problems and the latest findings, directly related to the research project conducted as a part of the diploma dissertation;

3. acquiring proficiency in searching for information (also from internet-related sources) and in reading scientific literature that are related to the research project, in English and with understanding, also acquiring ability to critically analyze the literature and to provide objective information on biology and biotechnology;

4. broadening the knowledge of experimental methodology;

5. improving the ability to form hypotheses, plan, perform, and document scientific experiments, while conducting the research project as a part of the preparation of the diploma dissertation;

6. application and further improvement of the student's abilities to analyze results of his / her own scientific experiments (with application of appropriate statistical methods);

7. developing the quality of being systematic while conducting scientific research;

8. application and further improvement of the students’ abilities to take part in scientific discussion in English about results of her / his experiments and using professional vocabulary;

9. practical application of the knowledge of intellectual property rights;

10. improving abilities to work as a part of a team;

11. application and further broadening of the knowledge on the principles of safety and hygiene at work, taking responsibility for her / his own safety and safety of others during a laboratory work, taking responsibility for the entrusted equipment

12. extending abilities of conducting experimental works in an enterprising way, showing responsibility for her / his own work and the work of other people.


Writing of a diploma dissertation:

The main goal of the subject is for a student to write a diploma dissertation and its abstract in English based on experiments gathered during conducting of research project.

The emphasis is placed on:

1. application and further broadening of the knowledge of branches of biotechnology that are directly related to the scientific project, including the current problems and the latest findings;

2. application and further broadening of the student’s abilities to: search for scientific information (also from internet-related sources), to read scientific literature, in English and with understanding, and to critically analyze it;

3. providing objective and reliable information on biology and biotechnology in the diploma dissertation;

4. application and further improvement of the student’s abilities to analyze results of his / her own scientific experiments (with application of appropriate statistical methods) and to confront them with the current state of knowledge from the fields of interest;

5. application and further broadening of the student’s abilities to discuss results of her / his experiments using professional vocabulary;

6. practical application of the knowledge of intellectual property rights, ethical problems in biotechnology, and compliance with the rules of professional ethics during writing of the diploma dissertation;

7. writing of the diploma dissertation and its abstract in English.

After finishing the subject, a student:

• knows and understands in greater depth, key topics of the individually chosen branch of biotechnology (in accordance with the chosen Department / Laboratory) related to the research project performed as a part of the preparation of her / his own diploma dissertation;

• knows and understands in greater depth methodology of experimental work, as well as specific research methods and techniques from the individually chosen branch of biotechnology (in accordance with the chosen Department / Laboratory) related to the research project performed as a part of the preparation of her / his own diploma dissertation;

• knows and understands in-depth and in details scientific topics directly related to the biotechnology project performed as a part of the preparation of her / his diploma dissertation;

• knows selected current problems and the latest findings of biotechnology related to the topic of the diploma dissertation;

• knows main concepts in the field of industrial property and copyright protection;

• knows and understands the principles of safety and hygiene at work in force in research laboratories.


Skills:

After finishing the subject, a student:

• is able to use selected advanced techniques and research tools related to her / his research project;

• is able to explore in English selected research topics using literature (also from internet-based sources) on biochemistry, biomedicine and various branches of biotechnology that she / he can critically analyze;

• is able to form scientific hypotheses and plan experiments allowing them to be verified by selecting appropriate research methods;

• is able to perform scientific experiments and document their course in a way that allows them to be repeated;

• is able to critically analyze and interpret the results of her / his own experiments using scientific literature;

• is able to can select and apply appropriate statistical methods to analyze the results of her / his own experiments;

• is able to write the diploma dissertation and its abstract in English based on results of her / his own scientific experiments;

• is able to take part in scientific discussion about results of her / his experiments, using professional vocabulary, showing criticism, as well as abilities to defend her / his standpoint;

• can use English at the level enabling her / him communication on topics related to the research project;

• can use English at the level enabling her / him to read with understanding professional literature related to explored research topics;

• is able to cooperate with other people while performing experimental work.


Social competences:

After finishing the subject, a student:

• is ready to enhance her / his professional qualifications and systematically follow the progress of knowledge of biotechnology and related disciplines.

• is able to provide society with objective information on the achievements of modern biology and biotechnology and to undertake discussion, when she / he meets unreliable opinions;

• ready to work individually, but also as a part of a team, because he / she understands the need for a systematic work on any long-term team projects.

• is ready to apply the principles of professional ethics and intellectual honesty in her / his own activities;

• ready to act in an enterprising way, showing responsibility for entrusted equipment, her / his own work and the work of others;

• is ready to take responsibility for the safety of her / his own work and the work of others.


Wymagania wstępne:

Entry requirements: The credit form the subject Laboratory practice III - research for Master thesis (WBT-BT2-023E) is required to start the subject Laboratory practice IV - research/writing of Master thesis (WBT-BT2-024E).


Entry requirements to write the diploma dissertation: accomplishment of the research project performed as a part of the diploma dissertation.

Forma i warunki zaliczenia:

(tylko po angielsku) This is an obligatory subject. The credit is obtained by a student who has achieved the learning outcomes, actively (taking into account duration of the subject - 270 hours) and dutifully participated in the subject activities.


The research part of the subject:

On-going assessment of the achievement of the learning outcomes is performed by the scientific supervisor (or the employee indicated by her / him) and it is passed orally to the student, during the course of the subject.


The following are taken into account:

1. progress in deepening of the necessary scientific knowledge related to the area of research and proficiency of the applied techniques;

2. proper use of research equipment and care of its condition, proper preparation and rational use of reagents and materials to perform experiments;

3. compliance with the principles of safety and hygiene at work;

4. advancing in independent planning of experiments;

5. achieving the qualities of being reliable and systematic while performing experiments;

6. ability to correctly record the course of experiments and document the obtained results, as well as analyze (with application of appropriate statistical methods) and interpret the results (e.g., in the form of a report requested by the teacher of the subject);

7. ability of the student to correlate her / his own obtained results with data from the literature, including the latest findings in the field directly related the scientific project;

8. ability to work independently as well as, when needed, to cooperate with other people in the course of the subject.


Writing of a diploma dissertation:

The final version of the student’s diploma dissertation must be positively verified once it has been checked with the help an anti-plagiarism programme. The student’s diploma dissertation is graded independently by the supervisor and the reviewer. The reviews of the diploma dissertation are prepared by the supervisor and the reviewer based on the applicable requirements established at the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology.

The research part of the subject:

In frame of the subject a student performs the research project in order to gather scientific data as a part of the preparation of her / his diploma dissertation. The emphasis is placed on developing proficiency and independence in these activities. The projects in which students participate are biotechnological or have strongly highlighted aspects of molecular biotechnology.

A student chooses a place to conduct the subject and a topic of the research project. This determines the scope of detailed knowledge from a given branch of biotechnology, which she / he will explore, as well as the range of methods and techniques that will be used by her / him. In this context, some of the experimental methods and techniques that have already been learned during the subjects Laboratory Practice II and Laboratory Practice III - research for Master thesis are improved by the student, but she / he also becomes acquainted with new methods while participating in the subject Laboratory Practice IV - research/writing of Master thesis.

A student improves ability to search for information (also from internet-related sources), to read scientific articles, and analyze them critically.

The student explores in detail the topics related to the scientific projects, including the knowledge of selected current problems and the latest findings. The student: develops and improves a range of modern research techniques, becomes familiar with research equipment and handles it, prepares some reagents and materials necessary to perform experiments.

The student improves her / his abilities to form hypotheses and to plan experiments. The student performs specific experiments, as well as gathers, analyzes, and interprets the obtained results, showing an appropriate degree of independence and proficiency in the activities.

Student independently presents the obtained results and discusses them in the context of the modern scientific knowledge. The works are carried out under the surveillance of the chosen scientific supervisor (or a person indicated by her / him).

Writing of a diploma dissertation:

In the frame of the subject, a student conducts her / his individual scientific work, which results in a diploma dissertation. The diploma dissertation is a solution of a specific scientific problem and it is based on the original results gathered by the student from the project. The project is biotechnological or has strongly highlighted aspects of molecular biotechnology. The diploma dissertation is prepared by the student on her / his own in writing in accordance with the rules applied to original scientific articles in the discipline of biological sciences and based on the specific requirements established at the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology. During the consultations with the supervisor, the student gets to know the detailed rules, including the rules for writing of individual parts of the diploma dissertation, the principles of preparation of its introductory part, principles of presenting research methods and results, principles of analysis and discussion of the obtained results. Individual parts of the diploma dissertation written by the student are consulted with the supervisor, in order to correct factual, stylistic, and editorial errors. Additionally, consultations with the supervisor enable the student to refine the final version of his / her diploma dissertation.

Obligatory:

The student’s knowledge is expanded mainly based on original and review publications focusing on: topics directly related to the ongoing scientific project, including theoretical and practical aspects of methods and techniques used during the subjects. They are, for example, indicated by the scientific supervisor or found independently by the student.
