European Integration Theory and Practice

(tylko po angielsku) Students will know the main theories of European integration, will be able to analyse the EU in terms of these theories, will be able to assess the cognitive value of the theories, and will better understand the past and present of European integration and the European Union.

Specific Intended Learning Outcomes

1: (K_W09+++) The student has ordered, extended knowledge about the theory of European integration and knows how to apply theoretical models to analyse the process of European integration, including sub-regional integration.

2: (K_U07+++) The student can apply the theories from different areas of European Studies to analyse processes and draw accurate conclusions on causes and effects of researched phenomena.

3: (K_U02+++) The student has the ability to read with comprehension and critically analyse texts pertinent to European studies and has the ability to compare them to texts presenting different views on the subject, confront them and draw his or her own conclusions.

4: (K_W11++) The student has deepened knowledge about the institutional architecture of the European Union and the characteristics of the various institutions, as well as knowledge about their role in the decision-making process of the EU.

5: (K_W15+) The student has extended knowledge of various forms of social structures and civil society institutions and the interconnections between them.

6: (K_U10++) The student has the ability to prepare presentations and communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions (in Polish or in language of study programme) individually or in a group.

7: (K_K02++) The student has the ability to effectively work individually as well as interact and work in a group, performing different roles in it.

(tylko po angielsku) This course presupposes basic knowledge of the EC/EU history and institutions. Students who do not have this knowledge should consult relevant literature prior to or during the course.

• John McCormick, Understanding the European Union. A Concise Introduction, 5th or 6th edition, Palgrave Macmillan, Basingstoke 2011 or 2014.

• Neill Nugent, The Government and Politics of the European Union, 7th or 8th edition, Palgrave Macmillan, Basingstoke 2010 or 2017.

(tylko po angielsku) There are the following requirements for passing the course:

1. Participation in classes.

2. At least one in-class presentation of c. 20 minutes (each worth 20 per cent of the final mark) in classes 3–9 and two interventions, one on each of two topics determined to be discusses in class 10 (each worth 5 per cent of the final mark).

3. An essay review of a book, book chapter or paper from a journal on European integration published in the past three years, chosen by students and accepted by the instructor (20 per cent for the final mark). The maximal length of the essay: 3,000 words. The essay can be substituted with another in-class presentation.

The assessment of a review will concern: the coverage of the argument of the book or paper, the quality of critical assessment including external references, and the language and style.

4. A written examination (remaining percentage towards the final mark, depending on the number of presentations and/or an essay).

In the examination, students will be requested to write accounts of selected theories discussed during the course.
