Knowledge:

Students:


- Understand methodology of applied biological sciences;

- Apply basic ecological and evolutionary principles to current problems;

- Understand theoretical framework for methods applied to biological sciences;

- Can recognise limitations of scientific methodology;

- Know basic mathematical models applicable to study the mechanisms of evolution;

- Understand the mechanisms of the basic ecological processes at the level of populations, communities and ecosystems; the principles of ecosystem functioning;

- Know the basic methods of ecosystem survey and field measurements, collecting materials and sampling, concerning: biomass stand and production, abundances, productivity and respiration of selected groups of organisms;

- Know basics of quantitative genetics and methods of experimental evolution as tools for testing hypotheses concerning evolution of behavioural adaptations;

- Understand the importance of integrating genetics, physiology, ecology and evolution with the study of animal behaviour;

- Know physical and chemical principles that shape physiological processes and hypotheses about the evolution of physiological processes


Practical skills:

Students:

- Integrate knowledge provided from interdisciplinary sources to solve research problems;

- Evaluate data and results using critical thinking skills;

- Can present the results in multimedia presentation in English.

- Are able to make a description of complete research project;

- Can effectively use a spreadsheet computer programs in order to prepare well-organized database and to perform statistical analyses;

- Are able to use simple mathematical models to develop an understanding of the evolutionary processes;

- Are able use the existing resources to collect and summarize the state-of-the-art information about a particular problem;


Social competence:

Students:


- Effectively collaborate with other students in analysing results, and preparing oral presentations;

- Are able to find appropriate sources that can be summarised and integrated into multimedia presentation;

- Are aware of importance of access to data, knowledge and results of scientific studies in ecology and evolution;

- Are aware of importance and role of scientific honesty, data reliability, intellectual property rights and rules of access to data and scientific information;

- Accept the importance of quality of research results presentation for effective scientific communication.

Attendance on regular meetings with the tutor

Pełny opis:

Students will work with their tutors. Emphasis will be put on topics concerning Master theses including suggested by the programme ecological and evolutionary research options. Tutors will give advice to students during tutorial meetings. However, the majority of time is planned for individual work of graduate students.
