Efekty kształcenia:

Knowledge

PhD student comprehends principles of major biomedical methods and is able to interpret data obtained by application of the methods. PhD student knows how to select methods for given studies on different aspects of biomedical research. PhD student understands importance of appropriate methodology for the outcome of experiments.

Skills

PhD student is able to:

- Choose an adequate animal model for given studies

- Identify an appropriate analytical method for the studies

- Plan experiments in accordance with available analytical tools

- Understand the outcome of the analyses

Attitudes

PhD student:

- Accepts the need for compliance with methodological requirements to obtain reliable data

- Understands that the correct selection of methods is critical for recognition of his/her research and publication in high-end journals

- Understands importance of discussion of methodological approaches prior to experiments with his/her peers and supervisors

- Recognizes a need for keeping oneself up-to-date with current methodology

Forma i warunki zaliczenia:

3 components will be evaluated:

1. A final essay (70% of grade)

2. Attendance of seminars (5% of grade)

3. Active participation in seminars (25% of grade)

Metody sprawdzania i kryteria oceny efektów kształcenia uzyskanych przez studentów:

Two verification methods will be applied:

I. Assessment of active discussion during seminars

PhD student will be provided with suggested reading material prior to the seminar. During seminar, PhD student will actively participate in discussion on a given topic with his/her classmates and faculty staff. This will allow for evaluation of Knowledge, Skills and Attitude of the PhD student.

II. Evaluation of an essay prepared as a partial fulfillment of self-studies

The topic of the essay will be formulated in such a way that not only Knowledge of the PhD student could be evaluated but also his/her Skills and Attitude.

Metody dydaktyczne:

- Interactive lectures (slides, videos) – theoretical background to biomedical methodology

- Interactive seminars – open discussion of given topics/methods with other course participants and academy staff

- Self-studies – reading of recommended articles/chapters

Bilans punktów ECTS:

Active participation in the course:

Lectures – 15 h

Seminars – 25 h

Passive research for seminars:

Reading of articles and/or chapters – 44 h

The written assignment (the final essay):

Reading and writing - 16 h

In total: 100 h = 4 ECTS

Pełny opis: (tylko po angielsku)

Lectures:

Introduction to biomedical research and its goals. General animal models (mice, rats and unconventional models such as zebrafish) vs. in vitro models, including 3D cell cultures; ethical aspects. Bases of (monoclonal) antibody production and their significance in biomedical research. Particular methods to be introduced and described include: PCRs, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, western blot and its modifications, zymography, types of ELISAs and RIAs, activity assays. Principles of flow cytometry, data acquisition and analyses. Application of different types of microscopy in biomedical research. Principles and advantages of intravital microscopy for studies on in vivo processes.

Seminars:

- Research techniques used to study unconventional animal models: gene sequencing and cloning, primer design and quantitative study of the gene expression (M. Chadzińska)

- Molecular analyzes in a nutshell: gene expression (RQ-PCR) and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing (P. Grzmil)

- Cytometric analysis in practice: available tests and analytical tools (J. Homa)

- Western blot-based techniques: pros and cons (A. Ptak)

- Diverse approaches to analyze protein and steroid hormone concentration in different biological samples (A. Rak).

- How to get the most from your sample: what microscope is the best choice? (G. Tylko)

- Intravital microscopy: how to image processes occurring in real time in live animals (E. Kołaczkowska)

- Methods applied in studies on cancer cells, 3D cell cultures (M. Opydo-Chanek)
