(in Polish) Zakładane efekty kształcenia: Student zapozna się z głównymi zagadnieniami biogeografii, w języku angielskim, odnoszącymi się do obszarów wyspowych w znaczeniu geograficznym jak i ekologicznym. Zrozumie działanie głównych czynników ekologicznych i biogeograficznych kształtujących fauny wysp kontynentalnych i oceanicznych, w tym wpływających na liczebność gatunkową obszarów izolowanych oraz korelacje pomiędzy obszarowo-gatunkowe. Pozna główne sposoby dyspersji pasywnej i aktywnej migracji, rodzaje barier i ich wpływu na możliwości dyspersji organizmów. Zapozna się z podejściem opisowym i analitycznym do zagadnień konkurencji międzygatunkowej na obszarach wyspowych. Zrozumie podstawy ewolucyjne takich zjawisk jak karłowatość, gigantyzm oraz nielotność na wyspach, oraz zapozna się z niektórymi charakterystycznymi gatunkami, które stanowią przykłady tych procesów. |

Biogeography definitions and scope; ecological and historical, descriptive and analytical phytogeography and zoogeography; island biogeography, scope and analytical methods; definition of an island; what is an island in geographic and ecological terms; different kinds of islands, continental (examples), reef (examples), volcanic oceanic (examples), others (examples), artificial; lake islands; island formation; plate tectonics and continental drift basic facts; geological history of chosen islands (Madagascar, New Zealand, Hawai), volcanism on the islands; formation of coral reefs; islands topography, water resource; early research on Island biogeography; Darwin and the Galapagos, Wallace and the Moluccas; theory of island biogeography; basic facts on Wilson and McArthur; immigration and extinction curves, target effect, rescue effect, stepping stone; faunal equilibrium; ways of dispersal on islands; long distance barrier overcoming, immigration process, biochory and hydrochory examples; human activity; island ecology; habitat saturation, species turn-over, niche competition, competitive exclusion, relaxation process; present and past extinction, overview of extinct forms; speciation on the islands: genetic drift, bottleneck, adaptive radiation; morphological, physiological and behavioural adaptation: giant and dwarf forms, brachyptery, sexual selection, evolutionary basis, contradictory hypothesis; examples (mammals, birds, invertebrates, vascular plants); Darwin finches example; how to measure ecological diversity of the islands Biodiversity on islands, diversity measures, surface and distance from main land dependence; biotic poverty of the islands; endemism on the islands: paleo and neoendemics examples; overview of most interesting volcanic islands Galapagos, Saint Helena, Reunion and Mauritius; Hawai, geography, geographic situation, their fauna and flora; case study of Sao Tome and Principe as a natural laboratory; overview of most interesting drift islands (New Caledonia, New Guinea, New Zealand, Pacific reefs, Corsica and other Mediterranean islands), geography, recent Pleistocene history, and their fauna and flora; island biogeography on continental areas, mountains, extinction, colonization, dispersal; ecological islands, long distance dispersal over inhospitable land; dispersal through ecological corridors, slow penetration; case study: Pantepuy; islands in phylogeographic studies; analytical methods, examples of case studies; protection of island habitats, priority areas, biodiversity hot-spots, threats by exotic species and anthropogenic activity, legal acts, some particularly important protected areas. |
