Efekty kształcenia:

KNOWLEDGE: level P1A: K_W01-02, 05-07, 13, 16-18 i 20 level P2A: K_W01, 04-08. SKILLS: level P1A: K_U03, 05, 09-14 i 16; level P2A: K_U02-04, 07-09, 11 i 13. SOCIAL SKILLS: level P1A: K_K01, 03, 05, 08; level P2A: K_K02, 05, 08-09 i 11. During the course participants get acquainted with the most recent (i.e. published in the academic year the course is run) experimental, peer-reviewed scientific literature (in English) and original review manuscripts (in English) dealing with the specific research problems regarding stem cell biology, tissue engineering and stem cell clinical applications. Participants learn through lectures provided by the course coordinator (AM Osyczka, PhD DSc) and Polish and foreign lecturers invited by the course coordinator (all lectures are given in English). Lectures (15h) provide the background knowledge and engage students into discussions throughout the lectures. Students are not given the copies of lectures. Instead they are given original English literature regarding the particular lecture topics. Advanced English knowledge is a must. Follow up seminars (15h) are run by the participants. All participants are required to give a seminar. Students are free to choose and present the topics of their interest, providing their presentations add new and most recent knowledge to the course subject and/or extend the topics already outlined during lectures. Literature presented during seminars must include most recent experimental work published in English in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to the new knowledge regarding stem cell biology and their application, participants learn the contemporary research problems regarding stem cells as well as research approaches to answer specific research questions. Participants search PubMed and related scientific databases for specific scientific subjects, get practice in constructing research hypotheses and get to know research methodology applied to solve specific research problems. They are also encouraged to construct new research hypotheses and find research approaches to verify them. Seminars are designed to teach how to present, critically review and discuss scientific data. Through the discussions students learn how to combine and effectively use knowledge from different disciplines as detailed in SKILLS. To reach teaching objectives, students must know the principles of biological processes, the structure and function of macromolecules, molecular mechanisms of intra and intercellular signaling, gene transcription and regulation, and post-transcriptional protein modifications etc. They also need to know and understand research tools used in cellular and molecular biology, as detailed in KNOWLEDGE. Besides, participants gain several social skills through discussions with lecturers and other course participants, critical evaluation of their own and others presentations, verify their knowledge and gain skills by referring to the lectures and seminars etc. as detained in SOCIAL SKILLS.

Advanced English knowledge (reading of scientific literature, understanding English-spoken lectures; addressing lecture and seminar topics in spoken English, presenting seminars in English).

Forma i warunki zaliczenia:

All participants must prepare and present seminars before they take an exam. Final exam score includes student activity during the course (lectures and seminars). Minimum 51% (e.g. 16 points out of 30 maximum) is required to pass the exam. Activity during each lecture and seminar gives 25% of the final exam score and it adds on to the final exam score (e.g. 0.5 point for the activity during one class, total 7.5 points out of 30 maximum). Scores for the exam and activity are verified each year depending on the students’ performance and difficulty level of the exam questions.

Metody sprawdzania i kryteria oceny efektów kształcenia uzyskanych przez studentów:

Active participation in lectures and seminars; Preparation and presentation of a seminar; Passing the final exam (open problem questions regarding lectures and seminars; participants may use their own notes and materials).

Students of I (BA) II (MS) and III (PhD) levels are welcome, although course is especially addressed to students of II level, “cell biology” track/specialization.

As outlined above: Every student of the course is required to prepare, present and actively participate in his/her and other seminars – this is a key requirement to successfully graduate the course. During lectures and seminars each student activity is notified and it adds to the final exam score. The exam (open problem questions) includes both lectures and seminars topics. The latter prompts students to prepare clear, interesting and scientifically valid seminars.

Literature (in English) regarding the course topics is updated and provided each year at the official Web page of the Department of Cell Biology and Imaging, Institute of Zoology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
