Cele kształcenia:

Presentation of the global problem of malaria. Practicals of malaria diagnostic methods.

Efekty kształcenia:

knowledge: student knows:

- the rules of the safety laboratory work;

- histological, immunochromatographic and molecular and methods to diagnose malaria infections;

- principles of molecular systematics based on molecular markers (cytochrome b);

- methods of DNA sequencing;

- the basic tools available in genomic databases.

skills: student can:

- diagnose malaria on the basis of molecular method and immunochromatographic tests;

- perform blood smears and stain microscopic blood specimens as used in laboratory diagnostics of malaria;

- edit short DNA sequences;

- interpret obtained results: presence of blood parasites in the samples, production of toxins by yeast;

- search scientific information from reliable resources.

social competence: student:

- understands the importance of the global problem of malaria, especially for the countries least developed socially and economically;

- is aware of the dynamic development of knowledge about malaria and sees the need for its constant updating;

- formulate research questions.

English language (spoken and written)

Forma i warunki zaliczenia:

Form: A short test end of class, scored activity

1x report during the course in 2-3 students team

1x individual presentation during the course (10- 15 min.)

Passing at least 51% of the total points possible to achieve

Metody sprawdzania i kryteria oceny efektów kształcenia uzyskanych przez studentów:

Learning outcomes will be checked by the test question, during the exercise and an evaluation questionnaire (pre and post test). The student should know the required keywords and methods used in the diagnosis of malaria, and should be able to characterize haematological parameters of the birds and humans blood, and to list the dangers caused by blood parasites.

During the exercises, the practical skills will be checked continuously - assessment of the correctness of the procedures, evaluation of the activity on the basis of participation in the scientific discussion and assessment of the correctness of the formulated questions. The student should be able to diagnose the presence of Plasmodium sp. in the host's blood on the basis of known methods.

- Basic information on hematological parameters of birds and humans, and infections caused by the malaria parasite

- Molecular diagnostics (DNA isolation, nested PCR, electrophoresis, sequence analysis using databases) and laboratory (preparation, staining and analysis smears) of infections caused by the malaria parasite.

- Biotechnology in the service of medicine (production of antimalarial drugs on the example of the yeast model)

- Basics of microbiology (preparation of substrates, yeast inoculation, incubation, growth of microorganisms)
