Cele kształcenia:

1. Obtaining basic knowledge on medical biotechnology.

2. Familiarize students with the most important research techniques used in medical biotechnology

3. familiarize students with the applications of medical biotechnology in medical practice.


Efekty kształcenia:

Student who passed the course:

1. knows the current achievements of biotechnology and has knowledge of basic techniques and research tools used in different sub-disciplines of biotechnology (plant biotechnology, medical and diagnostic biotechnology, recombinant protein production) [BT1K_W21, P1A_W04, P1A_W05, P1A_W08]

2. knows how to use correct scientific and technical terminology in the subject matter in English [BT1K_U05, P1A_U02]

3. uses online tools, including databases and search engines for scientific publications, to the extent necessary to acquire and process information on natural sciences and biotechnology (BT1K_U06, P1A_U03)

4. is aware that biotechnology carries with it bioethical dilemmas and is prepared for their perception and the need for self-determination [BT1K_K03, P1A_K04]

5. In the face of constant updating of knowledge in the subject area, he / she understands the need for continuous learning [BT1K_K01, P1A_K01, P1A_K05, P1A_K07]

Molecular Biotechnology

Skrócony opis:

Medical biotechnology uses organisms and organisms-derived materials for research and to develop diagnostic and therapeutic products that help treat and prevent human diseases. In general, the course covers some general aspects of medical biotechnology as well as its detailed applications.

Pełny opis:

Specifically, it focuses on the history of medical biotechnology, the methods of molecular biology, genetic engineering tools, molecular diagnosis: techniques and applications, the methods of cell culturing and tissue culturing, a biochemical basis for action of selected groups of drugs, preclinical and clinical studies of new drugs, molecular-directed therapies, pharmacogenetics, pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine, targeted therapies, methods of phenotyping cells, the use of flow cytometry in diagnostic tests, transgenic animals in examining disease mechanisms, testing new therapies and potential drugs, in vitro and in vivo gene transfer techniques, the fundamentals of gene therapy − vectors and selected clinical trials, recent findings in gene editing – comparison of ZFNs, TALENs, CRISPR/Cas9, gene editing in therapy of human disease, stem cells and their potential use in regenerative medicine, ethical aspects of medical biotechnology – molecular diagnostics, gene and cell therapy and therapeutic cloning, molecular mechanisms responsible for the formation of new blood vessels, the anti-angiogenic therapies used in the treatment of cancer.
