  • tygodniowy wymiar godzinowy nakładu pracy studenta wynosi 45 h;

Skrócony opis:

The aim of the course is to look at all aspects of the body language (non-verbal communication) in various situations in everyday life. Knowing the elements of body language and their functions one can not only improve the interpersonal communication, but also to make his/her professional life successful. Non-verbal communication is not merely replacement or accompaniment of verbal communication, but a very important complementary element of it. Specialists believe that in the situation of dissonance between the verbal and non-verbal signals referring to the same message, the latter one is true.

We will base on the research conducted by Paul Ekman, Desmond Morris, as well on the observations and analyses of body language experts (see film documents given in the section “literature”). In the second part of the course we will see, how the results of Ekman’s research were used in the series "Lie to Me". We will try to indicate inaccuracies that appear in the presented material and bring in examples from our own experience.

During the course the practical side of nonverbal communication will be emphasized - with elements of workshop. It is also intended to use multicultural environment which will be created by the participants themselves. However, it will depend on the participants of the course.

4. Eye contact.

5. Reaction of pupils.

6. Head’s movement.

7. Shrug of shoulders.

8. Handshake.

9. Gestures (touch gestures).

10. Body posture and movement.

11. Voice – tone and speed, the way of expression.

12. Behaviour in various environments (spatial behaviour).

13. Natural and feigned behaviour.

14. Culture and body language.

15. Personal experience and body language.

Efekty uczenia się:

Knowledge – at the end of the course the student should be able:

• list elements of non-verbal communication;

• indicate elements of non-verbal communication involved in every day life and explain their meaning in particular situations;

• list signs and signals that have the same or different meaning in various cultures;

• indicate behaviour common for man and animals.

Skills - at the end of the course the student should be able:

• to choose signs and signals appropriate for a particular culture and subculture in order to be properly understood and at the same time not to violate prevailing rules;

• to perceive as many as possible non-verbal signs and signals sent to the student during interpersonal communication;

• to interpret body language depending on a situation context;

• to interpret properly a verbal information in a context of non-verbal language;

• to apply the obtained knowledge while watching professionals who should be experts in body language (e.g. actors in films).

Competences - at the end of the course the student should have the following attitudes developed:

• to be aware of environmental and cultural differences which influence non-verbal communication;

• to behave and act in accordance with the rules that prevail in the culture or subculture the student will find herself/himself in;

• to be able to interpret any situation considering both verbal and non-verbal communications;

• to try to send unambiguous signs and signals;

• to clarify ambiguous signs and signals.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

Written examination (two dates) at the end of the winter semester in the period stated in the regulations of the Jagiellonian University.

The student can take the examination, if s/he participated in the course actively and performed the task agreed at the beginning of the course.

The participants of the course are kindly requested to come to the first meeting, because there will be given the detailed conditions of the course completion. The realisation of the course programme will start at the first meeting.

Cele kształcenia:

(tylko po angielsku) The aim of the course is to make its participants aware of the importance of body language, and broader – of non-verbal communication, in everyday life.


The aim of the course is to teach the students how correctly to interpret the signals sent by others, as well as to work on signals send by themselves.


The aim of the course is to improve interpersonal and intercultural communication of the students.


Wymagania wstępne:

(tylko po angielsku) Sufficient command of English to participate in conversations, discussions in the class is crucial in this course, which is based on such active forms.

Forma i warunki zaliczenia:

(tylko po angielsku) Written examination (short answers to open questions) at the end

of the winter semester in the period stated in the regulations of

the Jagiellonian University. To pass the final examination it is

required to obtain at least 60%. The student can take the

examination, if s/he:

• was prepared to the classes;

• participated in the course actively (among the others took part in the

discussions on the material the students were asked to prepare).

The students will be asked to prepare some materials (mostly to watch films, but sometimes they might be asked to write a short homework or read an article, also to analyze body language in a very short film) for every class, and then we will discuss them.

Therefore it is very important that the participants:

• have sufficient command of English;

• are present in the class;

• are active in the class.

All students are expected to attend classes regularly. Students might

be absent from the class 3 times during the semester with 15

classes. If there are less than 15 classes (due to the university

authorities’ regulations), less absences are admissible, e.g. 14

meetings, students might be absent 2 times. If a student is

absent more than admissible times because of serious illness,

s/he should deliver an appropriate official document as soon as

possible, and will be asked either to come and discuss the

material which s/he missed while absent in the class or to deliver

a written work. The student will have 2 weeks for doing this. If a

student is absent more than 5 times (if there are 15 classes

during the semester) s/he will be not admitted to an examination

and will not complete the course. The participants of the course

are kindly requested to come to the first meeting, because there

will be given the detailed conditions of the course completion.

The realisation of the course programme will start at the first

meeting.
