Cele kształcenia:

(tylko po angielsku) Risk- and Security Management is a concept that at first glance seems hard to grasp. Risk is practically everywhere, in every kind of interaction. The question therefore raised are: How can risks be mitigated strategically? Where do they present themselves? How can we use risks and threats to our advantage? How do companies, how do NGO’s and governments deal with the topic of Risk and Security Management respectively? The goal of this course is to give a broad insight into Risk and Security Management and how it affects everyday life.

Efekty kształcenia:

(tylko po angielsku) Kowledge – the student knows and understands:

• The main concepts of risk and security management

• The approach to risk and security management through risk identification, risk measurement and risk management

• Reputational risks and damages

• Operational risk and security and how to manage it


Skills – the student can:

• Demonstrate a critical knowledge of the main issues, challenges and debates in risk and security management

• The student can evaluate and apply different types of theories for explaining or understanding risk and security management in a practice scenario

Social competences – the student is ready to

• Predict individual and collective behaviours and consequences in risk and security management

• Has the ability to discuss, present and defend a newly acquired role in a diverse and challenging environment of risk- and security management


Forma i warunki zaliczenia:

(tylko po angielsku) Seminar presentations and participation – 30%; individual presentations – 20%; final essay– 20%; participation in workshop – 30% - student is required to pass each component.

Session 1 – Introductory Phase

This introductory lecture provides an overview of the course structure and introduces students to risk and security management. Key terms are also discussed as a central starting point for thinking about international risk and security management.

Exchange between students and teacher (forming a student-teacher contract, presenting learning goals and intended outcomes, discussing expectations etc.) No prerequisite nor reading required.

Session 2 – Implementation Phase

TASK: Implementing students background into class discussion and mind map for organisation. In this seminar students will be exposed to, discuss and actively apply key concepts in the field of risk and security management. Specific instructions for this seminar task will be provided in-class. The only preparation required is to read the readings.

Session 3 – Review Phase

After a short introduction, this seminar will focus on how risk management ties in with war on a global scale and operational risk management, a review of what has been gone through will be discussed in class. Active participation is required.

Session 4 Preparation Phase

In this class, small presentations will be prepared and tasks will be given to students in small groups with assigned roles, leading up to a scenario problem to be tackled in the next class. A lecture will be given on risk identification, risk measurement and risk management. Furthermore students will engage in a feedback round of each other as well as the lecturer.

Session 5 – Test Phase

Testing of the acquired knowledge so far in a given scenario, each student or each team will have an assigned role within a specific real-life scenario in which the preparations are put to the test to tackle incoming problems.

This lecture will deal with a review of the previous task with a self-assessment by the students, discussion of problems within the realm of reputational risk.

This lecture introduces the students to a variety of theoretical positions from which to analyze and ‘think’ about risks organisations face in an international context.

This lecture will again go through a small scenario with each student having assigned roles. Discussion of exam topics and requirements. No reading required.
