ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Goals of education:

This class will examine the genre of Science Fiction as means to better understand the broader scientific and philosophical questions of the 20th Century. At the end of the course the student should have a better grasp of both the hopes and fears that have define specific eras of the time under consideration.

Requirements:

Class attendance and successful completion of written final examination.

Conditions of gaining credit:

Class attendance and successful completion of written final examination.

Assessment methods and criteria for this course:

Completion of Final Examination and participation in weekly discussion groups.

Exam date:

Final class period of the semester there will be a final examination.

The class will discuss various literature and films each week-followed by a lecture. The student will be provided a list of questions each week that will allow them to discuss the broader themes using their own cognitive skills to broaden the knowledge on the subject matter.

The class will view several films and read several short literary pieces in the genre of Science Fiction. The class will move in a chronological manner encompassing most of the 20th Century. In doing so the class will use small discussion groups and the lectures to explore the broader moral, scientific and political questions of the era under consideration.
