Cele kształcenia: | (tylko po angielsku) After the completion of the course, students are expected to: - know and understand basic theories on developments of stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination - know and understand theories attempting to explain the reasons and origins of negative attitudes towards Others - know and understand contemporary interpretations of the origins of xenophobia and racism - know and understand contemporary discourses on racism and antisemitism - analyze discrimination against minority communities in Europe - diagnose problems and build up a toolbox of solutions to the challenges raised above. |

Forma i warunki zaliczenia: | (tylko po angielsku) Assessment Evaluation methods for the learning outcomes: • assessment of in-class and smaller group discussions based on lectures and reading materials provided • assessment of the knowledge gained, analysis and presentation (both oral and written) of group projects. • assessment of critical self-reflection. Students are expected to discuss the readings and develop their own position on the issues discussed. Each student will be required to prepare discussion points from readings required for classes. Evaluation of group projects 70% of grade In-class activities, class preparation and participation 20% of grade Critical self-reflection 10% of grade Students may have no more than 2 unexcused absences. Each absence above the limit will need to be made up with the course instructors. Students who are absent for more than 40% of the classes will automatically fail the course. |

Metody sprawdzania i kryteria oceny efektów kształcenia uzyskanych przez studentów: | (tylko po angielsku) Knowledge: EK1 (K2_W03), EK2 (K2_W16) – group project Skills: EK3 (K2_U01), EK4 (K2_U06) – evaluation of the thoroughness and integrity on the basis of the knowledge of the lecturer and critical remarks from the group. Assessment of the group discussions at the beginning of each lecture, which summarize the main points of the previous lecture. Assessment of participation and argumentation skills during in-class discussions. Evaluation of student’s journals EK5 (K2_U10) – presentation/lecture/speech. Assessment of the choice and knowledge of the literature used for the individual in-class presentations Social skills: EK6 (K2_K01). EK7 (K2_K03): analysis of the students’ progress with regards to activity during lectures, presentation of literature, participation in the project; volunteer work |

(tylko po angielsku) The course aims to introduce students to the mechanisms behind stereotypes, (in)tolerance, (anti)discrimination, and the building of the (negative) Other, in order to understand, analyse and explore ways in which these can be broken down and dispelled, diffused and changed. From theory to practice, the course takes students through the conceptual/ theoretical background and straight to practical solutions within the sphere of policy-making and education. Students will also engage in their own diagnosis, analysis and formulation of solutions to concrete problems of discrimination and intolerance. |

(tylko po angielsku) 1. Introduction to the course - literature, format, requirements, reading assignments. Introduction to project work. 2. Introduction to terms/concepts/definitions: racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, authoritarianism, stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination – preliminary analysis of phenomena 3. Assessing the patterns of discrimination – what can be considered discrimination? Anti-discrimination policies at the state level. 4. Anti-discrimination policies / actions at the EU level 5. Dominance, power, tolerance/toleration and the limits thereof: plural (multicultural) societies and their dilemmas 6.Migrant Others: Fear of small numbers and moral panic. 7. Prejudice in History. Film and Discussion. 8.Formulating solutions: policy-making, educational programmes, local initiatives 9.Strategies against racism, xenophobia, discrimination, and antisemitism: legislation, media awareness, intercultural competence. OSCE/ODIHR Tolerance and Non-Discrimination Program (TnD). 10. Introduction to intergovernmental organisations and NGOs dealing with Discrimination. (ADL, FRA, Pew surveys, TANDIS). 11. Human Rights. Discussion on series of videoblogs by the FRA Director Michael O'Flaherty addressing burning fundamental rights themes.
