Cele kształcenia:

(tylko po angielsku) This course aims at providing students with basic knowledge of American foreign and security policy in the Asia and the Pacific, starting with institutional framework, as well as goals and objectives of the U.S. policy in the region. Historical background and selected dimensions of American policy will be also discussed (policy towards China, Japan, India, SE Asia, Australia, regional organizations).

Forma i warunki zaliczenia:

(tylko po angielsku) Active participation in classes and written exam (lectures' and readings' based). Students who cannot participate in classes will be asked to prepare an extra essay (ca. 20 000 characters, topic must be agreed with the lecturer in advance).

1. Institutional framework of the U.S. foreign and security policy towards Asia and the Pacific – introduction.

2. Role of the President and his administration in the U.S. FP making process.

3. Federal agencies and legislative in the American FP.

4. Lobbying, media, public opinion in the U.S. Asia-Pacific policy.

5. Goals of American foreign policy and objectives of the U.S. FP in the Asia-Pacific region.

6. Historical background.

7. Sino-American relations – conflict or collaboration?

8. U.S.-Japan relations as a core alliance in the Asia-Pacific.

9. Washington-Tokyo-Beijing trilateral relations.

10. Cooperation with India and the regional system.

11. Significance of the Korean Peninsula in American policy.

12. Relations with Australia – agent of U.S.-Asia relations?

13. The role of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
