Cele kształcenia:

(tylko po angielsku) This course aims at:

• providing students with knowledge on contemporary problems of security in the Middle East and North Africa, thus it will focus on the historical, political, and socio-cultural circumstances and drivers of the current situation in the MENA region;

• enabling students to examine empirical cases related to the course theme through the prism and by utilizing a theoretical and methodological toolkit (which will include the following theoretical approaches: Barkin’s constructivist realism, the securitization theory, concepts of geopolitics and geoeconomics);

• practicing by the students the following academic skills (critical analysis of the sources, formulating the evidence-based assessment, delivering well-designed and well-argued oral presentations and written essays;

• encouraging collaboration, effective communication, and continuous and mutual learning in the application of system dynamics to real-world problems.

The course aims to zoom into the ongoing regional processes, acknowledging their multidimensional and dynamic character. When analyzing specific security related issues, the phenomenon of regional dependency and interdependence will be emphasized.

Moreover, the importance of the external influences and intervention (including the engagement of global power in the MENA inter-regional process)

Upon completion of the course, students shall

- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the main theoretical and conceptual approaches to security specifically examined in the regional, and international complex;

- demonstrate general knowledge of contemporary problems of security in the MENA region

- is aware of the scholarly theoretical approaches appropriate to the analysis of course and dynamic of key security challenges and developments in MENA region


Skills

Upon completion of the course, students can:

- -demonstrate the ability to point out, define and describe a range of security-related problems in the MENA region

- - demonstrate the ability to present their analysis in oral and written form and contribute to a common learning environment corresponding with academic standards


- Define and analyze specific security problems occurring in the MENA region (utilizing the academic methodology)

- Identify and interpret the evolving nature of the specific problem development

- Apply analytical thinking to address security problems in /of the MENA region



Social competences

Upon completion of the course, students are ready to:

- Cooperate with a group and prepare a presentation on a specific problem related to the course theme analyses


- Collaborate with peers to analyze complex systems using system dynamics tools and techniques

- Communicate insights and findings from carried analysis

- Engage in continuous learning and self-improvement to refine their understanding of system dynamics and its applications

Oral presentation during classes prepared in a group of students + written essay including workload (tasks carried out) of each member of the group

• class participation (participation in classes is obligatory) – 35%,

Skrócony opis:

Lectures delivered in the course will help to furnish answers to the fundamental question of the reasons and implications of MENA instability, which in turn brings about a high level of international insecurity. Therefore, the most important part of the course is related to the contemporary conflicts which affects MENA region and the world as a whole – like the war in Syria; the Saudi-Iranian conflict over supremacy in the Middle East and the long-lasting Israeli-Palestinian conflict which is deeply rooted in Middle Eastern politics. Completion of the course will enable students to make a critical analysis of the multi-dimensional MENA environment and help them to understand the complexity of the MENA region.

Introduction: presentation of the proposed course content, requirements and assessment criteria.

General overview of the MENA region: defining the geopolitical boundaries, identifying the key variables and drivers of political, economic, and social situations in the MENA region

Analysis of the security problem in the MENA region, through the prism of

Selected theoretical approaches and concepts.

Identifying and defining the security problem in MENA: brainstorming based on the literature and media reviewed.

The problem of inequality

• Mapping, defining and analysing the social and political cleavages in ‘divided societies of MENA region countries;

• Inequality as a threat to security

• Case study analysis based on selected examples:

The problem of democratisation of the MENA region (external and internal dimension)

• Mapping, defining and analysing the external democracy support and internal democratisation struggle (impact of the political regime nature vis a vis security considerations)

• Case study analysis based on selected examples: (e.g.: Arab Spring and its aftermath (differentiated dynamic in different MENA region countries), EU as a ‘Normative Power’)

The problem of migration and security

• Mapping, defining and analysing the problem of migration within the MENA region

• Case study analysis based on comprehensive analysis of the ‘2015 migration crisis’ and its roots, evolution (beyond the 2015), course and currents consequences

The problem of environmental security (climate change and pollution, water issues)

• Mapping, defining and analysing the environmental challenges and security threats

• Case study analysis based on selected examples of environments challenges in selected countries in the region.

The problem of energy security (energy resources exploitation and trade, critical infrastructure)

• Mapping, defining and analysing the issues of energy security in the regional perspective.

• Case study analysis encompassing the issues of security of supplies. Security of critical infrastructure, cyber security and energy sector, energy transition as response to environment security demands.

The problem of armed conflicts

• Mapping, defining and analysing the armed conflicts in MENA region.

• War and peace in international law

• Case study analysis of the selected arm conflicts (eg.: the armed conflicts and any related peace processes will be covered in subsequent section and focusing on developments in Iraq, Syria and Turkey; the Israeli–Palestinian Egypt and Libya and Yemen.

The problem of terrorism

• Defining the phenomenon and mapping the terrorist groups and terrorist action in the MENA region

• Tracing the process of evolutionary changes in the nature and scope of operation of the terrorist groups active in the MENA region

• Case study analysis based on selected examples ((e.g., the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine [PFLP], Black September, Fatah, Abu Nidal

Organization, Hezbollah, al-Qaida in Iraq, al-Nusra, al-Qaida and Islamic State [IS])

The Problem of occupation and security

• Defining and mapping the [phenomenon of occupation (acknowledging the legal and political perspective

• Occupation and security studies concern

• Case study analysis based on selected examples: Israeli occupation of Palestinian Territories, Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara)
