This course would aim to present various contexts of dis- and misinformation in the mass media. It was designed to present both, historical conditions, as well as the current situation regarding mass media, misinformation, disinformation, media manipulation, and propaganda in the new media infosphere. During this course, we will discuss the most important historical examples of fake news, their consequences, as well as the general causes of misinformation in the news media industry. Among others, the discussion will cover also different issues relating to a society in which the internet and social media play a key role. It will address the social, cultural, political, and legal contexts of social media, including issues such as Web 2.0 and the new media audience, the impact of social media on journalism, filter bubbles, algorithms, self-mass communication concepts, and online spreading of disinformation. The course aims to increase awareness of social media threats as well as to improve digital and media literacy. |
