Student is aware of how digital media affect the changes in artistic practice


Student understands complex relationships forged between art and technology in the course of the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century.


Student understands basic concepts describing the specificity of technological art


Student understands the links between culture and technical progress

Students efficiently uses the new media’s communicational environment to find suitable information on the course’s subject matter (including social media platforms of academic value)


Student properly evaluates the quality of information available in the new media’s communicational environment


Student formulates informed critical opinions on the new media art (in discussion and and in written form)


Student can design the major retrospective of the new media art (the tendency or an artist)


Attitudes


Student understand the need for life-long learning and acquiring the current knowledge on the artistic practices in the field of new media art


Student can plan and execute the medium and long-range project assignment


Student can forge and run the efficient cooperation within a project team (of up to 5 people)

Student efficiently employs basic concepts in the field of cultural theory, knows the main tendencies in the contemporary art, is familiar with the digital and networked communication tools, can analyze the academic texts in the field of cultural theory

The pass the course the following requirements need to be fulfilled:

- Active participation in class (taking part in the plenary discussion based on the assigned readings and tasks)

- Preparation for class (reading the assigned texts, carrying out the assigned tasks, preparation for the discussion) – both individually and in a team

- Preparation and presentation of the final project (individually or in a team)


Metody sprawdzania i kryteria oceny efektów kształcenia uzyskanych przez studentów:

The participation in the course will be graded based on the following criteria:


- preparation of the final project (quantitative assessment in points)


- presentation of the final project (quantitative and qualitative assessment in points and as a written report delivered after the presentation to the leader of the team by email)


- assessment of the presence in the class (2 absences in the semester are allowed)

In this course, participants will explore the topic of evolution of artistic practices in the field of technological art, new media art (art using the digital and networked media) and bioart, including in the historical perspective. The main tendencies, groups and artists will be presented. Participants will also become familiar with the main centers and festivals of new media art, such as Prix Ars Electronica (Linz), TRansmediale (Berlin), WRO Bienniale, Ars Electronica Center (Linz), RIXC Centre ofr New Media Culture (Riga), FACT (Liverpool), WRO Art Center (Wrocław).

The main objective of this course is to enable participants to critically analyze multifarious relationships between art, technology (including synthetic biology and genetics) and new media.

3. From kinetic art to early interactive art

5. Tactical media and hacktivism

6. Between e-literature and expanded writing to augmented textuality and transmedia storytelling.

8. The art of expanded visuality: from praxinoscope and panoramas to mixed reality (VR and AR)

9. Art and media in public space – media facades, locative media art

10. Sound art – sound as artistic medium
